LED (light emitting diode) lights are the next step in the evolution of light. Fire was first, then incandescence, and fairly recently, fluorescence. Each in turn supplanted the previous by providing better control, lesser heat and brighter illumination.

LEDs have been through a process of evolution in their own right. The high flux LEDs used now are better in output, efficiency and reliability.

Diodes let electrical current flow in one direction only. In the simplest terms, LEDs are special diodes that produce light while electricity is flowing through them.

An LED is made of semiconductor material, a lead frame to keep it in place and a covering of epoxy resin. There are no loose or moving parts. The epoxy allows the light to escape the semiconductor. It also angles the light and protects against the elements. The entire LED is embedded with epoxy, making it extremely tough and durable.

The semiconducting material of the LED contains impurities and creates a structure called a “pn junction”. As current passes through the LED, the materials that make up the junction react and light is emitted.
Unlike incandescent lights, which rely on an electrically heated filament in a sealed atmosphere to produce light, an LED is a solid-state device that controls current without heated filaments. This makes LEDs very reliable. Because LEDs don’t emit much heat, they are safe to use with a wide range of materials – wood, plastics, metals, etc.

The wavelength of LED light and its color depend upon the band-gap energy of the materials forming the pn junction. Red, green and yellow LEDs have been around the longest and are more common. However, other colors like white, green and blue are being used now.
